485 Accident Today CHARLOTTE, North Carolina — A major incident on Interstate 485 in northeast Charlotte forced a full closure of the highway today after a tractor-trailer caught fire, causing significant traffic disruptions and prompting a large emergency response.
The incident occurred shortly before 2:30 p.m. in the northbound lanes near the Idlewild Road exit, according to the North Carolina Highway Patrol. Authorities say the truck became fully engulfed in flames after what appears to have been a mechanical failure. Flames and thick smoke forced immediate closure of all northbound lanes as fire crews battled the blaze and worked to secure the scene.
Charlotte Fire Department units responded quickly, isolating the burning vehicle and extinguishing the fire. No injuries have been reported so far, and the truck driver was evaluated at the scene and released without medical treatment, officials said.
“Given the proximity to a heavily traveled exit and peak traffic times, shutting down the interstate was necessary to ensure public safety,” said an N.C. Highway Patrol spokesperson. Emergency crews directed motorists to exit the interstate and follow designated detours while cleanup and investigation continued.
The closure led to major delays across northeast Charlotte, with motorists advised to avoid the area and seek alternate routes. I-485 remained shut for several hours as crews cleared debris, investigated the cause of the fire, and checked the roadway for damage. Authorities expect periodic closures and slowdowns to continue into the evening commute.
Traffic officials cautioned that the investigation remains ongoing, and they urged drivers to exercise caution in the area and stay informed via traffic alerts.
This remains a developing story; further updates will be provided as more information becomes available from law enforcement and emergency response officials.
